Pinus densiflora
Japanese Red Pine
Description
Japanese Red Pine is an evergreen conifer that reaches 10-50' tall and 5-20' wide. It is an upright pine tree with an open growth habit. Leaves are dark green needles that may yellow in the winter. Lots of cones dot the tree. Bark eventually becomes gray and fissured. This tree prefers full sun with well draining soil. It does not tolerate hot, drying or cold winds. It does poorly in areas with air pollution. Established trees need little water. Many varieties exist and thus it's a popular pine for gardens.
