Tsuga heterophylla
Western Hemlock
Description
This Tsuga is a tall, graceful, single-trunked tree with lateral branches and a drooping central leader. Foliage is a lustrous dark green color, with a soft, fern-like texture that are flat and blunt-tipped. Bark is reddish brown which becomes furrowed with age. Small cones dot the tree and are purplish-green when young but turn brown with age. This evergreen Oregon native does best in full sun with moist, well draining soil. However, this tree can grow in understory conditions which promote slow growth in deep shade. It reaches 25-75' tall and 15-25' wide. Prune to retain central leader. Used for bonsai.
