Pinus sylvestris
Scots Pine
Description
Scots Pine is an evergreen conifer that quickly reaches 12-40' tall and 10-20' wide. Young trees have an irregular pyramidal habit but changes to a spreading, flat-topped habit with lower branches dying. Bark is orange tinted, creating a focal point in the garden. Foliage is gray-green needles. Cones can be asymmetrical. This tree does best in full sun with well-draining, acidic soil. It tolerates poor and dry soil. Retain central leader by removing crossing branches. This tree becomes more attractive with age; many cultivars available. Grown for Christmas trees.
