Description

This Oregon native is a deciduous broadleaf shrub that reaches 8-15' tall and 4-8' wide. It is a multi-stemmed shrub that may be erect or spreading in habit. Leaves are oval to rounded, with serrated margins. they turn orange in fall before dropping. Attractive white flowers appear in spring. After bloom period, small red berries mature to black-blue color during summer. Birds and mammals love the berries. This shrub can be pruned to remove older stems and shape into a tree. This plant does well in full sun with well-draining soil. Established plants tolerate seaside conditions. Can be used for erosion control. This plant forms a thicket which provides shelter for birds.
