This broadleaf deciduous shrub reaches 10' tall and wide. It is often multi-stemmed, with a broad crown. Foliage may be kidney-shaped or heart-shaped and blue-green. Pea-like flowers appear before new leaf growth; pinkish purple small flowers appear in late winter through spring. Brown fruit pods appear in summer but may last through winter. They are attractive on this plant. This shrub may be pruned to be more tree-like in habit, if desired. This plant tolerates full or part sun with well-draining soil. Established plants are drought tolerant.

This deciduous shrub has bold, rich green foliage and large, showy clusters of flowers to 1' across. Borne in the summer and fall, the flowers are shades of pink, rose, red, white or blue.

This fast-growing deciduous tree grows to 90 feet in height with a 45' spread. It is a coastal and inland native which flourishes on north facing slopes. It has very large leaves, 6-15 in. wide, that offer spectacular yellow fall color in cool areas. It is found in streambanks and watershed canyons and should only be used in areas that are naturally moist.
