Madrone

Common name:Madrone
Botanical name:Arbutus menziesii

Arbutus menziesii has a smooth trunk with lovely, peeling bronze-colored bark. Shiny dark-green, oval, toothed foliage covers the tree. Showy white spring flowers are followed by red berries. This evergreen tree can reach 30-50' tall and 15-25' wide. This Oregon native does best in full sun with acidic, well draining soil. Peeling bark makes this tree a bit messy. This tree is difficult to establish; it must be planted in very well-draining soil. Established trees need no summer watering. Prune to thin the interior of the tree to increase air circulation.

Evergreen Euonymus

Common name:Evergreen Euonymus
Botanical name:Euonymus japonicus cv.

This broadleaf evergreen shrub can slowly reach 1-12' tall and 2-6' wide. It has a dense oval habit in full sun but a sprawling open habit in shade. Foliage is glossy, dark green and small. Tiny, greenish-white flowers bloom in summer. Pinkish-red fruit appear in late summer or early fall. It tolerates full sun but needs good air circulation. Mature plants tolerate complete shade. This shrub can be pruned to look like a small tree when mature. It tolerates poor soil, heat and coastal conditions. Can be used for screens and hedges.
